The journal describes the trip from Indiana to California by way of St. Joseph, Fort Kearney, the Platte, Fort Laramie, the North Platte, and Willow Springs. Everts records a meeting with Col. A. J. Vaughan, agent for the Iowas, Sacs and Foxes, on the Nemeha River. The journal describes the country over which Everts traveled and the sickness and hardships.
